Introduction As part
of the International Tea Day 2006 observation, a regional
level meeting of the south zone including trade union and
small grower organisation representatives from Tamil Nadu
and Kerala was held at Coimbatore on 23 July 2006. The objective
of the meeting was to prioritise the issues of workers and
small growers in the tea sector and develop an action plan
at the regional and local levels for further actions.
Participants
The meeting was attended by trade unions as well as small
grower representatives from Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Trade
union representation included AITUC, UTUC, INTUC, HMS as
well as sectoral trade unions such as Hill Plantation Workers
Union, All India Federation of Plantation Workers Union,
Valparai, Anaimalai Diraveda Thozhilalar Muuetra Sangam,
Valparai, Anna Thotta Thozhilalar Sangham, Valparai, Vivasaya
Thozhilalar Munnetra Sangam, Gudalur, Vivasaya Thozhilalar
Vargha Union and Plantation Working Class Union, Thalapuzha.
Small grower representation included Small Tea Growers Association,
Nilgiri, INDCOSERVE, Tea Producers' Marketing and Processing
Cooperative Society, Wayanadu, Salisbury INDCO, Gudalur
and other tiny and small growers from Tamil Nadu and Kerala
